How to play Ant Colony
Scuttle for a crumb
Move with the arrow keys or WASD, or hold a finger where you want to go on mobile. Walk over any golden crumb to sling it onto your back - Bigger crumbs pay more.
Haul it home
Carry the crumb to the anthill at the bottom of the garden and walk into the dashed drop ring. The delivery banks your points and a fresh crumb appears somewhere on the field.
Respect the bullies
Red ants patrol until you come close, then chase. Carrying a crumb slows you down. You can still outpace a chasing ant in the first three levels, but from level four its top chase speed exceeds your carrying speed. Plan a route home before picking up food.
Watch the sky
From level two a magnifying glass glides after you. Its light circle is harmless until the inner focus ring starts shrinking - That is your cue to leave, immediately.
Chain deliveries
Each delivery within eight seconds of the last raises your combo, and every combo step adds points to the next drop. Three lives, no continues - The run ends when the garden wins.

A crumb route is useful only if you can get back to the anthill. Fishy replaces carrying food with growing as you eat, so the set of safe targets changes during play.
What Ant Colony is like to play

Ant Colony shrinks you down to garden scale and gives you one job: feed the colony. Golden crumbs lie scattered across the grass, the anthill waits at the bottom of the screen, and everything in between wants to ruin your afternoon. Red bully ants patrol the field and give chase the moment you wander close - They are slower than you, but a crumb on your back slows you more, and outrunning a bully while carrying lunch is a geometry problem you solve at full sprint. From level two a magnifying glass drifts over the garden, and if it catches you in its circle the focus ring starts closing; stand still too long and you cook. Every crumb delivered pays points, quick back-to-back deliveries chain into combos, and every fifth delivery raises the level - More bullies, faster chases, hotter glass. You get three lives, a moment of mercy after each hit, and a score to measure against the best delivery run you have managed before. Every restart scatters the crumbs again and sends the bullies on fresh patrols, so the garden never repeats itself.

Where Ant Colony came from
Insects and arcades go way back. Centipede (1981) made a garden pest the star of one of the best-selling cabinets ever built, Anteater (1982) sent a sticky tongue winding through an ant nest, and Sandy White's Ant Attack (1983) put giant ants in an isometric city and let you rescue whoever they cornered. The bug game became its own little genre: small hero, big field, everything hungry.
The other half of Ant Colony's family tree is the carry-it-home game - The loop where the points are not for touching the prize but for getting it back to base. Crystal Castles, Pengo and a hundred playground variants proved that a simple fetch quest turns into real strategy the moment something chases you on the return trip, because the cargo changes what your own speed is worth.
Ant Colony welds those two traditions together at picnic scale: seeded crumbs, patrolling tempers, a combo clock for the brave, and the one genuinely original menace every kid with a summer afternoon will recognize - A magnifying glass, wielded by someone offscreen who has definitely done this before. Deliveries fund the colony, the colony funds your score, and the glass just wants one clean shot.
Ways people play Ant Colony
- Classic bug arcades
- Centipede, Anteater and Ant Attack - The early-80s cabinets that made garden fauna the best enemies in gaming.
- Fetch-and-carry games
- Crystal Castles, Pengo and their kin: games where the score is earned on the trip home, not at the pickup.
- Chase-AI dodgers
- From Pac-Man's ghosts onward - Anything where reading pursuit patterns matters more than raw speed.
- Ant sims
- SimAnt and the colony-strategy branch, where the ant is a civilization instead of a courier with three lives.
Ant Colony questions and answers
How do I score points in Ant Colony?
Deliver crumbs to the anthill. A delivery pays 50 to 70 points depending on crumb size, plus 15 per combo step when you chain deliveries within eight seconds of each other.
What do the red bully ants do?
They patrol until you come within range, then chase. Getting caught costs a life, resets your combo, and knocks the crumb off your back - The bullies retreat for a moment so you can regroup.
How does the magnifying glass work?
It appears at level two and drifts toward you. Inside its light circle a focus ring starts shrinking; if it closes completely you lose a life to the heat. Step out of the light and it resets.
Why am I slower sometimes?
Carrying a crumb cuts your speed by about a quarter. That is the whole tension of the game: loaded ants are rich ants, and rich ants are catchable ants.
How many lives do I get?
Three. Each hit grants a couple of seconds of invulnerability to escape with, and the run ends when the third life goes.
When do more bullies show up?
The garden levels up every five deliveries. A second bully joins at level three, a third at level five and a fourth at level seven, and chase speed creeps up the whole way.
Does the garden change between runs?
Yes. Every restart scatters new crumb positions and sends the bully ants on new patrol routes, so the field you learned last time will not be waiting for you.
Can I play Ant Colony on my phone?
Fully. Hold a finger anywhere and your ant steers toward it, which makes the juking and looping around bullies feel natural on a touchscreen.
