In May 2013, Vietnamese developer Dong Nguyen of the tiny studio dotGears released Flappy Bird, a one-button flyer he built in a matter of days. It sat almost unnoticed for months - Then, in early 2014, it rocketed to the top of the app charts worldwide, reportedly earning around fifty thousand dollars a day from ads while players raged at scores stuck in the single digits.

Then came the twist nobody saw coming. In February 2014, at the peak of the craze, Nguyen pulled the game from the app stores, saying its runaway fame had ruined his simple life. Phones with Flappy Bird still installed were listed online for absurd sums, hundreds of clones flooded in to fill the vacuum, and 'flappy' became the name of an entire genre: constant scroll, one input, gravity as the villain.
